Luxury travel trends: Hyper-local food

In the wake of the horsemeat scandal, luxury resorts are going to commendable, and sometimes unusual, lengths to ensure guests know exactly what they're eating.

The horse meat scandal caused consternation for those of us who discovered that, all this time, our lasagne was equine, not bovine, but it has also provoked wider examination of what we eat. Luxury retreats are expected to serve quality produce, but a growing number are now going further to ensure their guests can be confident of provenance. One trend is for customers to be served “hyper-local” food, another for them to procure the ingredients for their meals themselves.

Manhattan is an unlikely source for fresh, natural produce, but guests at the mid-range nyma hotel can book a foraging tour led by “Wildman” Steve Brill. The naturalist guides visitors through New York’s green spaces in search of edible bark, berries and leaves. More upscale New York addresses are getting in on the trend too. Renowned local restaurant Daniel, for example, occasionally serves dishes made with wild pine needles. In Florence, guests at Villa La Massa can join the hotel’s trifolau and his truffle-hunting dog in search of the elusive tartufo bianco (white truffle). At The Sarojin, Thailand, residents who book the “catch, cook and dine” package can fish for snapper using a traditional line, before being taught about local cuisine by the resort’s executive chef […]

Summer Guide 2013: Cities

Head to Amsterdam's canals as the city marks the 400th anniversary of these waterways, and take a look, too, at the Rijksmuseum (rijksmuseum.nl), which has just reopened following a 10-year restoration. Munich's art gallery, the Lenbachhaus (lenbachhaus.de), has just reopened after an extensive renovation and the addition of a modern wing by Norman Foster. To mark the occasion, the hotel is offering a special package, the Lenbach Experience, starting 13 May. Summer solstice and views from the sky Manhattan style

With one of the most famous skylines in the world, New York is best seen from a height – and as soon as summer hits there are so many ways to capture the electric horizon. Whether it’s seeing the first glimpses of New York on the flight before touchdown, as the plane casts over the long strips of long island beaches which surround the city, or from a sunny spot of grass on the High Line, elevated three stories above the sidewalk, there is the opportunity to be awe-struck at literally every level!

Located in the heart of the city and surrounded by towering skyscrapers, The Hotel @ Times Square provides the perfect base from which to enjoy New York. Situated close to a plethora of venues with rooftop bars (and scheduled to open its own in the autumn), there are plenty of ways to see the city clearly from this central hub – and so many landmarks to spot!

For those wanting to step away from the bar scene this summer, why not get a view of the Empire State Building from the air, with a trapeze session from the Trapeze School New York? Recently reopened for the summer, this dynamic company is dedicated to making flying trapeze available to anyone who seeks inspiration, challenge, fitness or just a couple hours of unique fun!

And if that’s not enough height, nothing provides the same adrenaline rush in New York as a helicopter tour around Manhattan. While the city can be very crowded, busy and loud from street level – it’s completely different from above, and a helicopter tour offers a quick and comfortable way to see famous landmarks, parks and buildings from a new perspective.

However, when is the best time to see Manhattan at its most beautiful? Few people know that while the UK celebrates the summer Solstice - when the sun rises in perfect alignment with the pre-historic stones of Stonehenge, signalling the change of season, for Manhattan that special day comes twice a year. For 2013 ‘Manhattanhenge’ falls on 28 May and 13 July, when the setting sun aligns precisely with the Manhattan street grid, creating a radiant glow of light across its streets, simultaneously illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of the borough's grid.

Centrally located in Midtown Manhattan The Hotel @ Times Square offers free child stays, complimentary continental breakfast, wi-fi and phone calls nationwide. Based on two sharing, prices start from $254.99 per room (approx. £83 per person, per night) in May and $204.99 per room (approx. £64 per person, per night) in July. For more information or to book visit thehotelattimessquare.co.uk. Flights and accommodation taxes excluded.

Jubilant July In New York City

New York is a fantastic place to be on Independence Day. At 9pm on 4 July, Macy’s annual firework extravaganza will explode from a gathering of barges on the Hudson river watched by throngs of revellers from its banks and bridges.

Alongside the spectacular display (last year over 40,000 fireworks were sent up to 1,000 feet in the air!) there are always high-calibre celebrity performances while the entire event is screened live on NBC to millions across the country.

What’s more, 2013 is an extra special year for the city which took such a battering by Hurricane Sandy last October. The storm caused extensive damage to Ellis island forcing the iconic Statue Of Liberty to close to the public, just one day after its year-long refurbishment. Independence Day will mark the re-opening of the attraction, a moment guaranteed to bring an extra level of excitement to the city’s celebrations.

And where better to stay than just a short sub way ride away from Ellis Island at affordable yet chic nyma, the new york manhattan hotel, offering free stays for children aged 12 and under plus free continental breakfast and wi-fi. Prices in July start from just $184.99 per double room (£61 per person). To book, call freephone 0808 178 6363 or visit www.thenewyorkmanhattanhotel.co.uk.

nyma and InterContinental Hotels Go Wild For Food

New York’s nyma (New York Manhattan Hotel) has partnered with wild-food expert Steve Brill to launch a foraging package for guests staying at the property in June 2013. The one-night package includes a four-hour foraging tour, uncovering the wild foods available in New York’s green spaces.

Foraging has enjoyed renewed relevance thanks to the rise of Nordic cuisine in restaurants (see Edible Authenticity and Roland Rittman – The Collector). As consumers become increasingly disenchanted with the industrialised food chain, they are looking to go beyond the local-food market (see New Locavores) and participate with the provenance of their food. Read more about this in The New Hunter-Gatherer.

Another hotel embracing local food is hotel giant InterContinental’s London Park Lane property, which has introduced a series of cookery classes for kids at its Cookbook Cafe dining space. The Seedling Series Kids Cook programme, a partnership with London-based charity Edible Playgrounds, aims to teach kids where food comes from while celebrating sustainable and locally sourced ingredients.

The twice-monthly seasonal classes, which begin in March 2013, will include instruction on how to make an edible garden, a lesson about the property’s rooftop beehives and a session on how potatoes grow. Read more about the rise of ‘koodies’ (kid foodies) in Gastrokids.

Top 5 rooftop bars in New York

April 1, 2013 --
http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2013/03/16/top-5-rooftop-bars-in-new-york/

VU Rooftop Bar

After its recent remodeling, the VU Rooftop Bar atop the La Quinta Inn in Koreatown now finds itself making lists like this one. Up until last year it was called Me Bar, and although the name has changed, the long-lasting happy hour with its exceptionally cheap drinks ($2 beers, $3 margaritas) remains intact. It's been described as having a sort of "fratty" atmosphere, what with the plastic cups, $4 Bud heavies and strict "you gotta know one of the bros [guests] in the house [hotel] before getting in" rule (note: we have yet to see that rule very strictly enforced, so far). But that shouldn't keep you from experiencing yet another unbelievable view to thousand-yard-stare at while your wallet stays thick and plastic margarita cups pile up around your lime-stained shoes.

Meet the Boss: Vijay Dandapani, President of Apple Core Hotels

March 18, 2013 --
http://www.101holidays.co.uk/news/meet-the-boss/meet-the-boss-vijay-dandapani-president-of-apple-core-hotels

Here at 101 Holidays, we like to get to know the people behind the world’s finest travel companies. This week we talk to Vijay Dandapani, President of Apple Core Hotels, a hotel ownership and operating company started in 1993, and now with five hotels in the mid-Manhattan area of New York. Vijay is a graduate of Cornell University’s masters hotel programme and was associated with the opening of a luxury resort in California besides working for four years at a luxury hotel chain in India. Living and working in Manhattan, Vijay is a Director at New York City’s Hotel Association as well as the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Other interests include flying (Vijay is a licensed private pilot), tennis and languages (fluent Italian besides two Indian languages).

* Where did you go on holiday in 2012, and why? Any plans for 2013?

“Rio de Janeiro. It has outstanding food, spectacular landscapes, polar contrasts in wealth, a storied past and, most importantly, very friendly people who are welcoming of both foreigners and other Brazilians. I’m heading to Machu Picchu this year and am particularly looking forward to staying at the eco-friendly Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

* What is your favourite bolthole in the UK and why?

“ Oxford – where I am lucky enough to be able to stay with family. I relish the superb food in really quaint settings such as the Cherwell Boat House, picturesque countryside a stone’s throw from London and a boatload of history to lap up.”

* If you could spend a long weekend in any city abroad, which would you pick, and why?

” London – it has everything from nightlife and museums to terrific food from almost everywhere on earth.”

* Please tell us three items that are always found in your luggage.

“My Mini iPad (essential for work emails and for downtime – books, Scrabble etc); amenity kit; running shoes.”

* What one thing would most improve people’s overall holiday experience?

“Always wear slip-on rather than laced shoes when flying – it cuts down on the time taken at security, particularly in the US. Always carry hand baggage that includes a spare set of clothes and chargers for smart phones and tablets to minimise the frustration caused by lost or delayed baggage. Lastly, do not take an airline’s word for it when it comes to connecting times at foreign airports and always check weather conditions and political news (strikes, etc) so you can allow more time if necessary.”

* What has been your worst holiday experience?

” Being stuck on a plane in a snow-bound airport (Brussels) for nearly seven hours while the airline dithered about whether or not to return to the gate.”

* Tell us your favourite hotel

In the UK: “The Balmoral in Edinburgh.”

In Europe: “The Hotel Adlon Kempinski, Berlin.”

Rest of the world: “The Taj Rambagh Palace, Jaipur.”

* What is the most exciting project your company is working on right now?

“A multi-million dollar project completely redesigning the lobbies of three of our hotels to give them a real avant-garde feel with features that are both appealing and functional while also using environmentally friendly material eg mini-tablet stations, free-to-use 24-hour cappuccino stations, lounge/relaxing areas that give guests a sense of belonging without intruding on those checking-in/out.”

* Thanks, Vijay.

New York's coolest free classes and courses....

March 13, 2013 --
http://blogs.loughboroughecho.net/onyourtravels/2013/03/new-yorks-coolest-free-classes.html

FOR those who've started 2013 with a renewed energy for life and learning, there are a few special places in New York where their curiosity can unfold, with activities from craft to capoeira available absolutely free of charge.

What's more, The Hotel @ Times Square in Midtown Manhattan provides the perfect base for thrifty travellers with a thirst for knowledge, as rates start from just £39 per person and include FREE amenities such as wi-fi, breakfast and national phone calls.

New York's busiest borough, Manhattan is a hive of activity throughout the year, with many weird and wonderful learning experiences to be had for absolutely nothing in return. The New York Public Library offers free homemade craft afternoons, while literary types will love Gotham Writers' Workshop - as the leading private creative writing school in New York, it frequently offers free one-hour workshops in partnership with local booksellers.

Those wanting to learn outside during the summer months (from May to September) should visit the Socrates Sculpture Park for free yoga, Pilates, martial arts and even scarecrow sculpting classes. This inspiring park, which was built by artists on a disused dumpsite back in the eighties, also offers a free outdoor cinema, specialising in art-house and independent films. Another hotspot offering free, innovative activities is Central Park, where it is possible to learn skills including pétanque, self defence and bee-keeping.

For visitors of all ages, wanting to learn more than they ever would in a classroom and make the most of Manhattan's natural spaces, Urban Park Rangers can be found at ranger stations in all parks. These friendly folk facilitate free hikes, canoe outings, fishing trips, bird tours, and workshops to enhance outdoor skills and uncover the natural marvels of New York's urban ecosystem.

Located on West 46th Street, within strolling distance of The New York Public Library and Central Park, The Hotel @ Times Square also provides guests with a host of FREE amenities, including free continental breakfast, free wi-fi and national phone calls, a free fitness suite open 24 hours a day and free stays for children aged 12 and under.

Rates in 2013 start from US$124.99 per room, per night (£39 per person per night). To book, call freephone 0808 178 6363 or visit www.thehotelattimessquare.co.uk.

Take a fresh bite out of The Big Apple this World Health Day

March 8, 2013 --
http://www.richardgreenwoodmedia.com/news/48/57/Take-a-fresh-bite-out-of-The-Big-Apple-this-World-Health-Day.html

Many people believe that New York is all about fast food, cupcakes, drinking cocktails, staying up all night and basically letting your hair down and your waistband widen. However, it’s also a city for health-junkies, offering plenty of opportunities for health and wellness – from cycling in the parks to healthy fast food restaurants.

For those wanting to experience New York’s world-famous bar scene, how about swapping quaffing cocktails (so nineties) for sipping from fine china in an on-trend tea speakeasy? This provides all the glamour and dark corners of a traditional prohibition drinking haunt – without the calories! Experience company Sidetour offers visitors a tea speakeasy tour promising to ‘expand people’s cosmic consciousness’, heighten the senses and awaken the palate!

After all that non-alcoholic drinking, a typical night in a club might not appeal. However, those wanting to dance the night away New York style should head to a no-alcohol dance party with No Lights, No Lycra; a weekly dance party that joins other freestyle sober dances in and around the city including 5Rhythms, Open Floor, Barefoot Boogie, Biodanza and the women-only Dance Dance Party Party, whose motto is: “No boys. No booze. No judgment. (Legwarmers optional).”

And what about the daytime? Well, aside from the health-conscious park activities such as inline skating, cycling, and jogging, New York holds the record for the largest yoga gathering in the world, and each year holds a yogathon in Times Square to mark the summer solstice. However, no trip to New York is complete without a day or two of serious shopping, and with an average of 150 calories a session burned from a shopping session, pounding the sidewalks of New York laden with bags is a sure fire way to earn your dinner!

Room rates at The Hotel @ Times Square (www.thehotelattimessquare.co.uk / freephone 0808 178 6363) in April start from $234.99 per double room (which equates to £78 per person). Centrally located in Midtown Manhattan, this cheap and chic hotel offers a host of FREE amenities including continental breakfast, wi-fi and national phone calls. Flights and taxes are excluded.

Foraging – New York’s New F Word

March 8, 2013 -- http://www.eglobaltravelmedia.com.au/z-more/hotel-deals/foraging-new-yorks-new-f-word.html

While American's hippy and drifter movements have long made use of its cities' abundance of free unwanted food, spawning unusual tribes such as 'dumpster divers' and 'freegans', real foraging in New York City takes a special kind of skill - and one that one Manhattan hotel is planning to help you to learn.

While you may associate foraging with the foodie scenes of Copenhagen or rural Britain, it will take more than a pair of hiking boots and a wicker basket to find your fayre in these city streets, where hedgerows are rare. Well, actually, hedgerows are non-existent.

Not that the city is without the odd farmers' market, and an obsession for 'wild food' has led to new ingredients appearing in menus at restaurants such as Acme (serving wild mushrooms), and Daniel (serving vitamin-packed wild pine needles). With these trends in mind, nyma, a midtown Manhattan hotel, has teamed up with one of the city's best known foragers to give guests a taste of the wild side of New York City cuisine.

'Wild man' Steve Brill has been collecting food from the city's parks since 1982, and on one of his weekly excursions he promises he can make a meal from some of the berries, bark, mushrooms and herbs that he discovers. Though we suspect you possibly may want to just nibble along the way, rather than rely on it for dinner. Hotel nyma is ideally placed between the modest Gramercy Park and the huge Central Park, so there is plenty of opportunity to try out your newly-learnt foraging skills after you've taken one of his tours.

Steve's bounty is not the only local food harvested in the metropolis, with rooftop hives providing local honey, courtesy of the New York City Beekeepers Association. There are also now a handful of rooftop farms growing fruit and vegetables, which end up in cakes, conserves and pickles that can be bought at farmers' markets, while some of the city's restaurants tend to their own private hothouses and vegetable patches.

If you stay at nyma in a twin or double room in June for the special rate of $274.99 (approx £184, based on two people sharing), the hotel with include a free foraging tour with Steve Brill. The rate includes continental breakfast, free wi-fi and national (US) phone calls, free use of a 24-hour fitness suite and free stays for children aged 12 and under.

Go foraging… in New York City?

While Manhattan may be famed for its skyline, super attractions and great shopping, one hotel is making a break from the norm by offering foraging breaks for urban explorers.

Nyma, the New York Manhattan Hotel, is offering the exclusive foraging tour promotion on stays this June and there will be the chance to visit parks, gardens and farms that are feeding the city’s new urban obsession for wild foods, and supplying a handful of pop-ups and restaurants with locally sourced and foraged blossoms, berries, bulbs and greens.

The hotel has paired up with the city’s best known forager ‘Wild Man’ Steve Brill (above), who has been collecting food from parks since 1982, to provide the foraging package which includes a tour that culminates in a meal made out of the berries, bark, mushrooms and herbs collected.

The foraging tour package starts from $275 for two and includes a stay in a double room and the foraging tour.

Hens in the City

A NEW KIND OF BACHERLORETTE IN NEW YORK CITY – With nyma, the new york manhattan hotel Known stateside as a Bachelorette, throw in the towel on a traditional hen do at home and get the girls across the pond for some serious fun in New York City. It doesn’t have to include bright pink feather boas and giant inflatable...balloons, as nyma, the new york manhattan hotel has a few classy, and slightly naughty, suggestions for the ultimate girls’ weekend.

Situated in central Manhattan, head to The Artful Bachelorette for a two hour master class on life drawing. Sound boring? Make that life drawing a gorgeous nude male model. Throw in a topless waiter serving champagne and finger food, a group photo at the end, oh and a trained art teacher, and enjoy an afternoon of hilarious girly fun. The session costs $85 (approx €63) per person and the bride goes free. They’ll post the finished pics back home free of charge too.

If feeling the need for a sweet treat after all that ogling, take the party to Max Brenner, Chocolate by the Bald Man on 841 Broadway for an extraordinary menu of delicious concoctions, including chocolate pizza, white chocolate soup, crème brulee and warm chocolate cake eaten using spatulas straight from the pan.

Don’t end up in any old bar at the end of the day. Try Bowlmor in Times Square, an ultra-trendy bowling alley offering glow-in-the-dark late night disco bowling from 10pm. Four levels of alleys with contrasting music, illuminated vintage posters and a 65-foot bar make this a pretty awesome alternative to the average cocktail joint.

And where better to stay than at stylish and affordable nyma, the new york manhattan hotel (www.thenewyorkmanhattanhotel.co.uk / +44 808 178 6363) who is offering an exclusive Bride To Be package with any hen do booking. The package includes accommodation in a king size room (based on two sharing) as well as one free signature nail manicure per hen at the Ohm spa* on Fifth Avenue from $284.99 per person for selected dates between 1 April and 30 June, and from $234.99 per person in July, subject to availability. What’s more, the hotel offers a host of FREE amenities including continental breakfast, tea and cappuccino in the lobby throughout the day, wi-fi and national phone calls. Offer only valid when booked as part of a hen do. Quote Bride To Be on booking.

Bargain Big Apple: Where to lay your head for less in the city that never sleeps

July18, 2012 -- dailymail.co.uk

The perennial problem for holidaymakers in New York is hotel accommodation. It can be prohibitively expensive at the best of times and even more so now that the pound is not at its strongest against the dollar.

Luckily, the Big Apple is not a city where you're likely to spend much time in your hotel room, so if you're strapped for cash it makes sense to trim your accommodation budget.

A new wave of 'affordable' hotels is springing up in the city that never sleeps, with many offering a range of ‘freebies’ including complimentary breakfast and free WiFi, (up to $30 a day in some hotels).

So if you're looking for a spot to rest your weary head after a long day sightseeing, why not try some of these hotels and tips?

Boutique bargain: Hotel @ Times Square is one of the best value hotels in Midtown and boasts an array of free amenities and services including free Wi-Fi and breakfast

In the hood

Consider choosing a hotel in the neighbourhood that you plan to spend the most time. Midtown has the widest range of hotels but if you are looking for a less corporate and more boutique feel, you should head downtown, particularly to SoHo, TriBeCa, the Meatpacking District, the Lower East Side and, for the more adventurous, Brooklyn or Harlem.

Midtown Magic

Midtown is ideal for Times Square and the Theater District, the glamorous stores of Fifth and Madison avenues, many of the top museums and attractions and Central Park. One of the best value hotels in Midtown, is the boutique-style Hotel @ Times Square (www.applecorehotels.co.uk) with a superb West 46th St location between 5th and 6th Avenue. A couple of minutes walk from the heart of Broadway, it is also just as close to 5th Avenue. Central Park is less than a 10-minute walk away and there’s a subway station at either end of the street.

The hotel boasts an array of free amenities and services including free WiFi, breakfast (seldom included in New York hotels), flat-screen TV’s and US domestic calls. Rooms start from $134.99 (£86) in January.

Similar facilities and amenities are available at its sister property, NYMA on W32nd St between 5th and Broadway. It’s just a couple of minutes walk from Macy’s, the world’s largest department store, and a few blocks from the mother of all camera and electronics stores, B&H Cameras.

Apple Core Hotels Debuts Broadway @ Times Square

February 16, 2012 -- hotelinteractive.com

Apple Core Hotels, owner and operator of five centrally-located, moderately-priced Manhattan properties, has unveiled the Broadway @ Times Square Hotel (B@TS), formerly the Comfort Inn, located on 46th Street west of Sixth Avenue––steps away from Broadway and Rockefeller Center. The hotel is set to undergo a renovation which will unveil upgrades to the property’s lobby and breakfast room areas, providing travelers with modern amenities at affordable prices. Rates at the Broadway @ Times Square Hotel start at $109.99 per night. Apple Core Hotels offers the most comprehensive list of complimentary amenities among independent and small chain properties located in NYC, including the hotel group’s famed “Three for Free” amenities – complimentary Wi-Fi throughout all properties, phone calls to anywhere in the U.S. and Canada, and continental breakfast.

Previously a Comfort Inn (the first hotel in Manhattan to go completely smoke-free), Apple Core Hotels transformed the property into an independent hotel. This move follows the successful brand de-flagging of two other Apple Core Hotels properties, The Hotel @ Times Square, which was formerly a Super 8; and nyma, the new york manhattan hotel (formerly a Red Roof Inn). With the de-flagging of the Comfort Inn, more than half of Apple Core Hotels’ properties are now independent. “The decision to de-franchise our properties has two-fold benefits for both our company and the consumer,” said Vijay Dandapani,

President of Apple Core Hotels. “Our independent properties are free of the rigid brand guidelines that must be followed when part of a chain and it gives us more flexibility with rates, offerings and amenities for the consumer besides enabling us to better position the hotel in new media outlets such as Twitter and Facebook. Additionally, by eliminating the franchise fee on our de-flagged properties, we have a higher stream of revenue share,” added Dandapani. “For example, since the de-flagging of nyma, profitability at the hotel has shot up by 15%.”

Under the direction of Moment Design principal Jessica Shaw, renovations to the Broadway @ Times Square Hotel will include: a large lobby lounge space with free Wi-Fi, upgraded complimentary business center with iMac computers, charging ports, and an airport check-in kiosk; and a redesign of the hotel’s breakfast room with an open-air/contemporary feel, complete with LEED certified materials, custom mural walls, room adaptability from breakfast hour to “happy hour” flat-screen televisions, free Wi-Fi, and a 24-hour coffee and cappuccino bar.

As is customary in all Apple Core Hotels properties, the Broadway @ Times Square Hotel’s guest rooms feature comfortable bedding, a flat-screen television, night reading lamps, an iPhone docking station, a cordless speaker phone, an iron and ironing board, and an in-room safe. The 60-person breakfast room will continue to offer guests a complimentary daily continental breakfast. A state-of-the-art fitness center rounds out additional complimentary amenities provided to guests.

About Apple Core Hotels

Apple Core de-franchises its third Midtown hotel

February 16, 2012 -- therealdeal.com

The nine-story, 79-room Comfort Inn at 129 West 46th Street has been rebranded Broadway @ Times Square hotel, owners Apple Core Hotels announced, and will undergo a renovation.

It’s the third time the discount hotelier has stripped one of its Midtown hotels of its chain franchising and brought it independent. Previously it rebranded a nearby Super 8, at 59 West 46th Street, and named it the Hotel @ Times Square, and a Red Roof Inn at 6 West 32nd Street became nyma, new york manhattan hotel. The firm owns two other franchised hotels in Midtown.

“The decision to de-franchise our properties has two-fold benefits for both our company and the consumer,” said Apple Core Hotels President Vijay Dandapani, President of Apple Core Hotels. “Our independent properties are free of the rigid brand guidelines that must be followed when part of a chain and it gives us more flexibility with rates, offerings and amenities.”

Further, the move to de-flag nyma increased profitability by 15 percent, Dandapani said.

Apple Core is spending $1 million to renovate the Broadway @ Times Square. It will upgrade the lobby, provide a complimentary business center with free Wi-Fi and redesign the breakfast area so it can be adapted to a bar in the evening. The project is expected to be completed in July and room rates will start at $110 per night.

Top spots to pop the question this Leap Year

February 3, 2012 -- travelbite.co.uk

Are you a woman who is tired of waiting to be proposed to? Well, this is your lucky year as women can pop the question on February 29th (according to tradition)!

According to an Irish legend, the tradition is believed to have started in 5th century Ireland when St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about women having to wait for so long for a man to propose. So, according to legend, St. Patrick said the yearning females could propose on this one day in February during the Leap Year. It was also considered a day of no legal status, a day in which women could take advantage of and propose to the man they wanted to marry.

Seeing as it only comes along every four years, make the most of this Leap Year and pop the question on a memorable holiday:

[…]

City Hotels Ring In The New Year With Cool Winter Deals

December 25, 2011 -- ny1.com

As part of a grassroots "hotel week" promotion, eight New York City properties are banding together to put heads in beds at a needy time of the year — the industry downtime from January 6-15.

“Right after the holidays is notoriously the slowest period for New York City hotels," says Deirdre Yack of Hyatt 48 Lex. "The holidays are over, corporate travelers haven’t really started to ramp up, so it’s a nice little pocket of time to offer some great rates."

[…]

For those on more of a budget, four hotels are offering rooms for $100. Two of the Apple Core hotels in Midtown, the New York Manhattan Hotel or "nyma" and the Hotel @ Times Square are participating (www.applecorehotels.com), along with the Pod Hotel in Midtown East (www.podhotel.com) and Z hotel in Long Island City, Queens (www.zhotelny.com).

New York City's first-ever "hotel week" offers deep discounts January 6 - 15

December 24, 2011 -- gadling.com

Sure, we have a love-hate relationship with the ever popular restaurant week, where restaurants in cities across the nation arrange to offer three-course meals for somewhere in the neighborhood of $35 for a week at a time in the spring and fall.

But we've never heard of this concept being applied to hotels. For the first time ever, New York City will host a "Hotel Week" (January 6-15) during one of the slowest occupancy weeks of the year in an attempt to boost tourism. It's a great way to experience hotels that are normally $500 a night and up, or for locals to get away for a quick staycation over MLK Day weekend.

Eight hotels (conveniently all in the same PR firm's portfolio) are offering these deals, with a one-night stay on a tiered system of $100, $200, or $250 a night. Info on how to book each property below:

"Every hotel in New York could use incremental business in January. We borrowed from the success of Restaurant Week and the fun I've had with staycations in the city," said Nancy Friedman, president of Nancy J. Friedman Public Relations. "There's nothing like escaping to an amazing hotel for a night––whether you're a local or a visitor!"

Guests can take advantage of the deals by calling the hotels directly and mentioning "hotel week" when booking, or through the hotel web site. (Booking details are listed in the above chart.) The promotion is subject to availability.

New York City Hotel Week offers rooms from $100

December 23, 2011- boston.com

The first ever New York City "Hotel Week" happens Jan. 6 - Jan. 15, 2012, and the room rates will send you running for the Big Apple. USA Today's Hotel Check-In reports that rooms will start at just $100 a night, and can be found from Long Island City to Times Square.

The new "Hotel Week" has been fashioned from the uber-successful Restaurant Week concept. Hotel publicity firm Nancy J. Friedman Public Relations came up with the "Hotel Week" idea and told USA Today that eight NYC hotels are currently part of the project.
The hotels participating will block out rooms for $100, $200 or $250, depending on the property (the closer you get to the city, the more expensive the rooms).

Here are the hotels participating in the Hotel Week promo (be sure to mention "Hotel Week" when you book):

NYC 'Hotel Week' rates as low as $100 a night

December 22, 2011 - usatoday.com

If you're not too holiday-partied-out between Jan. 6 and Jan. 15, 2012, you have a shot at booking a hotel in New York City - even in Times Square - for as little as $100.
The $100-a-night deals can be found for hotels such as a new boutique hotel in Long Island City or a basic hotel in Times Square that includes a continental breakfast. For $200 or $250, you can book a more upscale hotel.

So what's the deal? Eight hotels are joining what will hopefully be New York's first-ever, annual "Hotel Week," which is modeled after the ever-popular Restaurant Week concept.
Hotel publicity firm Nancy J. Friedman Public Relations came up with the "Hotel Week" idea and is kicking it off with six client hotels and two non-clients properties: the brand-new Hyatt 48 Lex as as well as Hyatt's stylish Andaz Wall Street.

Noting the success of Restaurant Week, publicist Nancy Friedman's aim is to make this an annual event.

I think it's a great idea, and one that other cities should consider.

Even though the timing follows the hectic holiday period, there are still plenty of people who could be lured by bargain rates. And the pre-holiday timing also makes it possible to buy a night or two for people on your gift list who live in the Tri-State area and seek excuses to drive into the city (hmmm...sounds a lot like my parents on Long Island!).
The hotels participating in Friedman's Hotel Week will block out rooms for $100, $200 or $250, depending on the property, so as you might expect, these rates are subject to availability.

Fine print

Are there catches? Sure. You must mention "Hotel Week" when you book. Some hotels, such as the trendy Gansevoort Park Avenue, also lists rooms for more than $250 so just be aware that you may see higher-priced - though still discounted - options. Finally, expect a basic room for the promo price, except in the case of the Pod Hotel, where the rate includes an upgrade.

The 10-day Hotel Week period - which includes two full weekends - falls in what's typically one of the slowest periods for New York City tourism.

Thanks in NYC

October 23, 2011 -- The Irish Mail

Why Americans give more importance to Thanksgiving over Christmas remains one of lives mysteries. But with no national patron saint, the feast has a quasi religious feel, and, like the rest of the country, New York will be taken over by floats and marching bands. This year, November 24, falls on a Thursday, ideal for a long weekend. The nyma hotel - thenewyorkmanhattanhotel.com - has rates from 225 per room per night (€82pp based on two sharing) next month, while Aer Lingus has return flights from Dublin for dates around the Thanksgiving weekend from €530 - 0818 365 000, aerlingus.com)

Black Friday for bargain hunters this November

October 12, 2011 -- SilverTrarvelAdvisor.com

Those wanting to visit New York for some serious retail therapy this winter should choose to stay at Nyma, the New York Manhattan Hotel over Black Friday weekend in November. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and kicks off the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. It's the busiest shopping day of the year - so the story goes, it's the only day where retailers are in the black not the red - with shops opening from as early as 4am offering fantastic sales and bargains.

Known in NYC as an unofficial bank holiday with many non-retail employers giving their staff the day off and with serious shoppers even camping outside their favourite stores, it pays to be in the know when it comes to what special deals each store is providing. Some of the biggest Black Friday discounts are found on hot electronic purchases such as video game systems, MP3 players and DVD players. Indeed, last year the numerous Apple Stores dotted around Manhattan were offering shoppers 30 per cent off iPods and 25 per cent off Macs!

Re-launched earlier this year with upgrades to its lobby and mezzanine areas, Nyma, the New York Manhattan Hotel has availability on Black Friday weekend (24 - 26 November) - to include Thanksgiving Thursday. Conveniently situated on 32nd Street between the bright lights of Broadway and the shops of Fifth Avenue, with Macy's on its doorstep, Nyma, the 171-room New York Manhattan Hotel is ideal for die-hard shopping fans. The budget-friendly hotel boasts a host of complimentary amenities, including continental breakfast, wi-fi, national phone calls, a fitness centre and bar. In addition, children aged 12 and under stay free of charge.

Rates at Nyma start from US$224.99 per room, per night over Black Friday weekend (under £73 per person based on two sharing). To book please call freephone 0808 178 6363 or visit www.thenewyorkmanhattanhotel.com. Flights and accommodation taxes excluded. Britishairways.com offers return flights from Heathrow to New York from £380 per person including taxes in November.

Scope out the night sky with a hotel stargazing session

October 5, 2011 - itineraries.msnbc.msn.com

Looking for something a little different in your evening entertainment on your next trip?

Look up — as in up at the night sky. October is prime time for stargazing — longer nights than summer, better weather than winter — and hotels across the country are offering stargazing programs that bring the universe into sharp relief.

“The natural night sky is one of the most spectacular things that humans used to experience on a regular basis,” said Alan MacRobert, senior editor at Sky & Telescope magazine. “This is a chance to go out and re-experience it in a deeper way than you can from your light-polluted backyard.”

And, of course, that nightcap, nightclub or pay-per-movie will still be there when you’re ready to head back indoors. With that in mind, here are a few places worth scoping out:

[…]

Apple Core Hotels: If you’re thinking midtown Manhattan is a poor spot for stargazing, well, you’re right. Perhaps that’s why this five-hotel chain just launched its “Journey to NYC, the Stars and Beyond” package, which includes one adult and one child ticket to the “Journey to the Stars” planetarium show at the American Museum of Natural History. Packages start at $330 and are available through Nov. 30.

nyma, The New York Manhattan Hotel

October 3, 2011 -- jetsettersblog.com

This autumn, New York is celebrating all things American and marking its past with a calendar of patriotic events including the opening of the 9/11 Memorial, Thanksgiving and the famous Columbia Day Parade. What’s more, nyma, the new york manhattan hotel is offering great rates, allowing visitors the chance to catch the city in all its glory and remember some key events in American history, with prices from just £80 per person.

Opening to the public on 12 September 2011, the day after the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, the 9/11 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance and honour to those killed at the World Trade Center site. The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools sit within the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in the North America.

For those planning a stay in October, New York’s abundant parks and tree-lined sidewalks will have started to turn from green to russet and visitors can enjoy the leafy delights of ‘fall’ with milder temperatures and fewer crowds.

The changing colours of New York’s leaves can be enjoyed throughout October into early November and is a truly all-American spectacle.

However for visitors wanting to enjoy the city’s faster-paced delights, on 10 October 2011 New York’s biggest street party, the Columbus Day Parade takes place. Remembering Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the Americas over 500 years ago, it draws enormous crowds, with more than 35,000 people expected to march up Fifth Avenue and fill Midtown Manhattan with music and dancing, while nearly one million people will watch.

Foodies and festive types should head Stateside for Thanksgiving, which falls on 24 November this year and marks the start of the Christmas season in the US. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is New York’s most famous Thanksgiving event. Starting in Central Park, thousands of chilly revelers line the route drinking flasks of hot chocolate, before returning home for a traditional feast of roast turkey and pumpkin pie. While the day is a national holiday throughout the US, in New York plenty of restaurants remain open, offering non-Americans the chance to try these culinary delights for themselves.

nyma, the new york manhattan hotel provides a comfortable and affordable base in the heart of Midtown Manhattan and is conveniently situated on 32nd Street between Broadway and Fifth Avenue, with the Empire State Building, Macy’s, Penn Station and Madison Square Garden on its doorstep. Hotel amenities include free Continental breakfast, free wi-fi Internet access, free national phone calls, a fitness centre and bar. Children aged 12 and under stay free of charge.

Chill Out In New York this Winter with The Hotel @ Times Square

July 17, 2011 -- unraveltravel.eu

New York is well-loved in the run up to Christmas 2011 for its flamboyant, festive decorations, amazing shopping and iconic giant tree at the Rockefeller Center. However, its lesser-known attractions and key winter events make it a must-visit city from as early as October, right through to February. What’s more, The Hotel @ Times Square invites visitors to enjoy all that this snowy city offers without freezing their cash flow.
There’s nothing like gliding gracefully across the ice with the New York skyline as a backdrop and, from October, the city’s most famous winter sport – ice skating can be enjoyed throughout Manhattan, from the old landmarks like Rockefeller Center to a brand-new rink in Bryant Park. Some ice rinks such as the Wollman Rink in Central Park also offer ice hockey and a skating school.

While for shopaholics, New York continues to be brilliant for bagging a bargain, especially in the run-up to Christmas, providing visitors with special discount cards for use at department stores and offering cheaper price-tags on those American brands – which are often much more expensive by the time they hit the British high street.
For the more adventurous, Winter Jam NYC in early February 2012 is a free annual winter sports festival at Prospect Park, Brooklyn that encourages locals and visitors to get out and enjoy the outdoors in the colder months. Young and old alike can head down to the Lake Placid snow field (where fresh snow can be pumped out if needed) and strap on a pair of cross-country skis or snowshoes, or create a snow sculpture, while the Pride of New York Winter Market offers free samples and refreshments from local food producers.

For those wanting to stave off the winter chill with some great food, NYC Restaurant Week takes place in late January 2012 and early February 2012 and offers diners the opportunity to eat at some of the finest establishments in the city without the high cost. What’s more, a few weeks after the famous ball drop in Times Square, the Chinese celebrate the Lunar New Year’s festival – a must-see event for culture-vultures and great for foodies too.
The Hotel @ Times Square provides a comfortable and affordable base in the heart of Midtown Manhattan and is situated close to the Rockefeller Center. Hotel amenities include free Continental breakfast, free wi-fi Internet access, free national phone calls, a fitness centre and bar. Children aged 12 and under stay free of charge.
This cheap and chic hotel is offering stays this winter starting from US$134.99 per room (approx. £84 per room), based on two sharing, subject to availability. To book, please call (freephone) 0808 178 6363 or visit www.thehotelattimessquare.com Flights and accommodation taxes excluded. Dialaflight.com offers return flights from Heathrow to New York from £433 including taxes in October 2011.

It's all change on the hotel scene, from the 4 million (£2.5m) renovation of the Plaza Hotel, the southern crown of Central Park, to the rebranding of two of Times Square's Sheraton Hotels. There's a brand new InterContinental, with a bistro from chef and restauranteur Todd English, right on Times Square and other additions to Midtown's landscape include the sister hotel to the Meatpacking's Gansevorrt Hotel, which brings a bit of Downtown hip to Park Avenue, and the just opened Setai, which rises 60 storeys about Fifth Avenue at a cost of $656 million (£410m).

Exclusive: New, non-chain hotel in New York's Times Square area for $199 or less

October 26, 2009 -- USA Today

By Barbara DeLollis:

If you're a savvy business traveler who needs to travel to the Big Apple on a budget, then you've probably been keeping track of the mid-priced hotels that have been opening there lately. [...] Well, here's one hotel that I can almost guarantee you've never heard - yet...

Called the Hotel @ Times Square, this newly revamped and opened hotel gives business travelers a Times Square-area locale and reasonable (for Manhattan) nightly rates - from $199 in peak season to $109 in low season. Included in the rate: breakfast, wifi in the lobby, cappuccino, a daily Hotel Times Square Bedroompg-verticalnewspaper and a 24/7 gym.

So what's it missing? A brand name.

Hotel @ Times Square is the brainchild of Vijay Dandapani, CEO of Apple Core Hotels, which owns and operates four other mid-priced, franchised hotels in Manhattan. I spoke with Dandapani last week about the hotel and his decision to go independent in a city packed with name-brand hotels, which business travelers usually prefer.

Prior to opening as the Hotel @ Times Square, the hotel had been a Quality Inn and then a Super 8, he said. So why go independent?

* * Freedom to pick perks: Dandapani has grown tired of answering to a hotel brand's "headquarters," or inches-thick brand guidelines that make specific recommendations. He told me he's no longer convinced that the big brands - whether Starwood or Choice, for instance - have all the answers when it comes to New York City's diverse group of customers. One chain recently banned him from upgrading a bedspread beyond what the brand rules specified, he told me. "Some of the (chains) go to ridiculous lengths to tell you what kind of coffee you can put in the lobby," he said. "We can give customers things that they don't usually expect in this category."Hotel Times Square Lobbypg-vertical
* * Foreigners more open to non-chain hotels: This particular hotel gets a disproportionate share of customers from outside the USA, and Dandapani believes that they don't demand a chain name. He just returned from Brazil, where he went to promote the hotel, and said that "even though the Brazilians are very well exposed to the American market, they still don't know the brands that well."
* * Save money: Even as many mid-priced, chain hotels such as Hampton Inns open in New York City, Dandapani believes he'll have an edge over them by cutting out the middle man. "Don't forget that Hampton has to pay 9% of revenue to Hilton," he told me. "So I'm able to offer more as a consequence of not having to pay the franchise element."
* * Web levels playing field with chains: What a chain brings to the table for hoteliers is its rich customer base and reservation system, but Dandapani believes that the Web makes it easier today for independent hotels to compete. "Distribution has been turned on its hat. The customer has taken charge," he said.

Apple Core ended the hotel's chain affiliation in 2008, then gradually closed the hotel in sections to revamp it. The company spent millions gutting the hotel's lobby, rooms and bathrooms, he said. The rooms didn't change in size, but they now contain modern touches like flat-screen TVs. The hotel also has a new breakfast space where customers get free breakfast including omelets.

"If you walked in two years ago, you wouldn't recognize the entrance today," Dandapani said.

To cater to business travelers with laptops, the hotel has free wifi in the lobby. To cater to government workers who may need to connect using a wire, the lobby also has a big table with the appropriate jacks, he said. The hotel also carries some phone chargers for people who forget their own and a 24/7 fitness center.

The hotel has other perks designed for international visitors, such as no charge if visitors arrive at 8:30 a.m. and want to check in early - and there's a room available for them. ("I've got to confess, it's not very often, maybe about 100 days a year," he said.) He created the policy mainly to benefit South American guests whose flights arrive at New York John F. Kennedy airport during early morning hours.

In New York, he said, "independent hotel" usually means that customers can choose between "funky, boutique" or "frugal and functional" hotels.

"Well, let's knock off frugal and funky. That makes us boutique and functional," he said. "While that doesn't sound exciting to some, it's very appealing (to others)."

Apple Core Hotels, a group of five Midtown Manhattan properties owned by a group of investors that include Kenny Grief of Englewood, has installed flat-panel televisions and iPod docking stations in all of its rooms.

"We did this a year ago," said Vijay Dandapani, president and chief operating officer. "I'm not sure we would have done this after the recession took hold," he said. The company planned to install TVs that double as mirrors in some of the bathrooms this year, but because business is slow the change was put off until early next year, he said.

The hotel was an economic choice with its double rooms starting at $129 US, including a hearty continental breakfast and free Internet. -

Buon Appetito! Apple Core Hotels Tempt With NYC Gelato Tours

May 6, 2009 -- HotelChatter.com

While New Yorkers pray for the out-of-nowhere blustery days to vanish for good, disgustingly hot weather is just around the corner. But it's tutto benne in the gelato 'hood.

Apple Core Hotels (the company behind the La Quinta Inn Manhattan, Red Roof Inn Manhattan, Broadway at Times Square Hotel, The Hotel @ Times Square, and the Ramada Inn East Side) has put together a "Gelato Tour" package where fancy ice cream fans can sample the Sicilian style giro del gelato throughout the West Village.

Through the room-and-sweets package, aficionados and amateurs get to tour Grom (an Italian gelati chain with old country flair), L'Arte Del Gelato (featuring Italian classics Stracciatella, Cassata Siciliana and biscotti), and Cones (the corn flavor with an optional sprinkle of cinnamon is recommended).

The hotel and frozen delight package is available from July 1 to August 31 and starts at $179 in July and $239 in August. Besides the three locations of chilled calories (up to $10 per shop), guests get centrally located accommodations and breakfast.

The catch? Paperwork. You "must pay for gelato up to $10 at each of the three listed shops...[and] present receipts to the front desk to receive credit to their credit card on file in the maximum amount of $30."

Wins and losses for travelers during recession

April 6, 2009 -- The Seattle Times, CNN and MSNBC

By Christopher Elliott: What travelers gain — and lose — during the economic meltdown, from more free Wi-Fi to even more baggage charges

Kiss those little bottles of lotion goodbye.

But don't despair. You stand to gain better things, thanks to the ailing economy. That includes free Wi-Fi in more places, better customer service and of course, many unbelievable bargains.

[…]

One of the first things travelers noticed after the economy headed south was that resort amenities, such as washcloths and little bottles of lotion, had disappeared from their rooms. But that's only half the story.

"The downside — particularly to a long recession — is that many hotels fall down on both quality of service and product," said Vijay Dandapani, the president of Apple Core Hotels, a group of budget Manhattan hotels. Renovation programs are reduced or canceled, along with staff training programs. "Other items include diminished variety in breakfast items — if offered free — and lower staffing, resulting in longer wait times."

Family vacation finances 101

March 31, 2009 -- MSNBC

By Suzanne Rowan Kelleher: Since March 1, guests can put future hotel stays on layaway at the recently renovated Red Roof Inn in Manhattan, located steps away from the Empire State Building. Free amenities include breakfast, in-room Wi-Fi, morning newspaper, and crib rentals.

With summer just a few months away, it’s the time of year when many families start thinking about vacation. The good news is that there are fantastic family travel deals at every turn, and this year’s summer vacation could very easily cost you 30 percent to 50 percent less than what you would have paid last year.

[…]

Here are 10 smart moves to help you finance your vacation and boost your family’s money IQ:

Put it on layaway
Some hotels are introducing layaway programs to let guests pay off their bill even before they arrive. Since March 1, guests at Apple Core Hotels in New York City have had the opportunity to use layaway to finance a future hotel stay at any of the group’s five properties, including La Quinta, Red Roof Inn, Broadway at Times Square Hotel, the Hotel at Times Square and Ramada Inn. “Guests can start with a down payment of as little as $20,” explains Vijay Dandapani, the President and COO of Apple Core Hotels. “Then they have the opportunity to build up the pre-payment in the time leading up to their trip.”

For travelers, it’s hard to argue with the combination of reasonable prices, flexible payments, and risk-free booking that comes with the Apple Core layaway plan. “There’s a misconception that New York City is expensive,” says Dandapani, pointing out that the rack rate for Apple Core Hotels is between $139 and $159 a night in July 2009. “We don’t impose a timeline with our layaway plan,” he says. “Guests can pay little by little, or they can pay off the balance all at once when they check out of the hotel.” What if a guest changes her mind and cancels? “She gets her money back,” says Dandapani. Best of all, opting for Apple Core’s layaway plan guarantees that you nail the best price. “If the rates go up, your reservation is locked in at the lower rate,” explains Dandapani. “And if the rate goes down after you book, we’ll refund the difference.”

The way Dandapani sees it, pay-before-you-go plans are an option whose time has come in the hotel industry. “We’ve seen that there’s a huge hesitation on the part of consumers to spend money and build up debt,” he says. “Our layaway plan lets our guests avoid a big charge on their credit card at the end of their stay. Frankly, I’m surprised more hotels aren’t trying it.”

Look Forward to Tax Day with $4.15 NYC Hotel Rooms

March 23, 2009 -- HotelChatter.com

Just like rhythm, the tax man is gonna get you, and thankfully hotels are more sympathetic this year. In New York, where you'd be hard-pressed to find someone not directly affected by the economy, Apple Core Hotels, a collection of five budget-friendly hotels in the center of Manhattan, are swooping in to save tax day with $4.15 rooms for the first two weeks of April.

The "Tax Time" package, which even includes free breakfast and coffee along with a central location in the Big Apple, can be had by calling one of the five Apple Core properties—Broadway at Times Square Hotel, The Hotel at Times Square, La Quinta, Red Roof and Ramada East Side—and entering your name into a drawing for the rooms, with ten nights at $4.15 up for grabs. In this case, you can score a room in areas like Midtown or next to the Empire State Building for less than the cost of your Turbo Tax software.

Just be prepared to have your taxes done early enough to enjoy a trip to New York between April 1-April 15, when the $4.15 room rate is valid, and make sure to give the Apple Core reservations line (800-567-7720) a call to register for the promo by March 29. Then, if you do get a nice fat refund from the government, it'll be like they paid you to come to New York anyways.

Hotels on the layaway plan

March 13, 2009 -- USAToday.com

It's a trend in these troubled economic times.

The idea is to allow consumers to pay for a stay in installments, which presumably is easier on some by not having to come up with a lump sum all at once.

Lodgings adopting the plan include Apple Core Hotels, with a half-dozen properties in the NYC area, including the Red Roof Inn there. It allows future guests to put $20 down on a booking, then pay what they want until settling the whole bill. And you can get the money back if you cancel.

Like the idea?

Apple Core hotels offers
recession-friendly pay plan

February 19, 2009 -- Travel Weekly's blog Hotel Girl

It's about time hotels started to think of clever ways of attracting guests during the crunch.

Apple Core Hotels, a co-branded group of budget hotels in Midtown Manhattan, is offering clients the chance to pay for their hotel stay in installments.

The "lay-away and stay" promotion allows guests to pay a small deposit and make any number of payments until they check in. Guests can still cancel up to 24 hours before with a full refund.

The hotels are mega budget - Broadway at Times Square Hotel, Ramada, The Hotel La Quinta and Red Roof - and all in good locations. AND they've all had a makeover.

So now there's no excuse to hop on a plane to the big apple - and you'll still have enough cash for a visit to Macys.

Apple Core Tries "Lay-Away" Plan

March 2, 2009 -- HotelsMag.com

Apple Core Hotels, a group of budget-friendly midtown Manhattan hotels, including Red Roof Inn, has launched a “Lay-Away & Stay” promotion available now throughout 2009. Similar to popular retail lay-away plans, Apple Core Hotels’ layaway promotion allows guests to create accounts, lock in low room rates and make incremental payments from the time they book through check-in.

With the “Lay-Away & Stay” plan, guests get the benefit of booking a room at a lower price but are not responsible for paying the entire room rate upfront. A credit card guarantee is required at the time of booking a reservation and guests must pay the remaining room balance upon check-in.

Apple Core says they understand the economic situation of today’s travelers and wanted to help alleviate some stresses by accommodating guests’ travel and financial needs. The budget-friendly program hopes to encourage visitors to still make travel plans without the pressure of having to dish out large sums of money upfront in order to secure reasonably priced accommodations.

Guests can make as many payments as they would like. They will need to provide the hotel with a valid credit card at the time of the reservation to guarantee the reservation. The first payment secures the booking (a minimum of $20) and locks in the rate. All final payments are due at the time of check-out. Upon receipt of the first installment payment, a booking confirmation with the guest’s installment payment is e-mailed and the credit card on file is charged according to the individual installment plan.

Guests have the option to cancel their reservation 24 hours prior to their arrival date before 3 pm EST and will be credited back for all the payments they made so far. If they do not cancel with 24 hours notice, they will be charged for one night's stay. In order to cancel a reservation, guests may call Apple Core’s Reservations department at 1-800-567-7720 or 212-790-2710.

Terms and conditions:
Offer is non-transferable. Offer valid throughout 2009 only, and based on availability. Any additional charges must be paid for by the guest. Offer cannot be combined with any other offers, promotions or upgrades or rebates/refunds associated with a guest’s stay.

Layaway plans are making a comeback-- not at Sears, but at local hotels.

Apple Core Hotels, which operates five budget properties in the city, just launched Lay-Away & Stay, a program that allows customers to secure a room for a future stay for as little as $20 down. They can then pay off the tab with personal checks up to the date of their reservation.

"If the price goes up between now and the time of the visit, you still pay the lower rate," explains Vijay Dandapani, president of Apple Core. "And if the price goes down, we'll work with the customer. People are going through tough times."

The company, which runs a Red Roof Inn, a Ramada and a Comfort Inn, is struggling, too. With the exception of one property, which boasts a 90% occupancy rate, its other hotels are just 50% full, even with room rates as low as $109.
